A MEDIEVAL SURVIVOR ON THE HEATH

Heathland landscape surrounding the Tower on the Moor

THE REMAINS OF A LORD’S HUNTING LODGE

Ralph, Lord Cromwell, built a fortified hunting lodge here in the mid-15th century. The main tower was approximately nine metres square; today its projecting octagonal stair turret survives to four storeys in unusually early local red brick.

Historic England records that much of the lodge was dismantled late in the 15th century, with brick taken for repairs at Tattershall Castle. The survivor is protected as a Scheduled Monument and remains a distinctive landmark in the Hotchkin course landscape.
