A memorial at the heart of the old village
This Grade II-listed Portland stone cross was unveiled on 18 March 1923 by Captain Stafford Vere Hotchkin and dedicated by the Reverend William Harry Benson-Brown. Designed by WH Wood and sculpted by H Jackson of Lincoln, it originally carried the names of 21 local men lost in the First World War; another name was added later, followed by nine Second World War casualties.
The memorial stands in the former churchyard of St Andrew’s. The church was damaged by a parachute mine during the Second World War and demolished in 1957, leaving the memorial as an especially important marker of the site and the community it served.
