The story behind the stop

A terrace rebuilt as before and a hostelry that endured

Cornwall Terrace appears in a surviving view made before 1898, close to the former railway crossing and the later Royal Hotel complex. During the Second World War the Tea House owners, Mr and Mrs Harriman, lived at number 2. It was badly damaged by the parachute mine that destroyed the adjacent Royal Hydro Hotel in August 1943.

The Harrimans hoped to modernise while rebuilding, but wartime regulations required the house to be restored as before. Nearby, The Mall was already a social venue by 1890 and became the Mall Wine Office around 1900. Its bar, billiard room and later patio have kept it at the centre of village life for more than a century.
