A TINY CHURCH OF OUTSTANDING QUALITY

OUTSIDE THE ABBEY GATE

“Without” means outside: the chapel stood beyond Kirkstead Abbey’s enclosure and may have served travellers and nearby residents. It may also have been built as a chantry chapel for Robert de Tattershall, who died in 1212.

The single vaulted space is largely intact apart from its roof. Despite its small scale, the moulded ribs, carved bosses and surviving medieval fittings make it one of the area’s most rewarding historic interiors.

AN EARLY ENGLISH GEM

Finely worked limestone, lancet windows and a beautifully proportioned vaulted interior survive from the early 1200s.

Look for dog-tooth decoration, carved roof bosses, ancient screenwork and traces of painted decoration.

WORSHIP STILL CONTINUES

St Leonard’s remains an active Church of England church, but services are occasional rather than weekly. Check the official calendar before travelling.
