A QUIET LINCOLNSHIRE WATERLOO MEMORIAL
AN OBELISK BESIDE A COMMEMORATIVE WOOD
The Imperial War Museums register records an octagonal granite obelisk carrying a bust of the Duke of Wellington. Colonel Richard Elmhurst erected it in 1844 in a field off Monument Road.
The adjacent Waterloo Wood was raised from acorns sown immediately after the Battle of Waterloo. Together, monument and trees form a modest but distinctive piece of 19th-century commemorative landscape.
