From country house to officers’ mess
Petwood was created for Lady Grace Weigall, with gardens designed by Harold Peto and completed in 1912. Those gardens are now included at Grade II on the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest, reflecting their strong Arts and Crafts design.
The house served as a military hospital during the First World War. Requisitioned by the RAF in 1942, it later became the officers’ mess for 617 Squadron while the squadron operated from RAF Woodhall Spa. Today it is a working hotel, so the heritage trail uses signed public areas and respects guests, events and any access restrictions.
