Two buildings, two sides of the spa story
The Golf Hotel began as Clevedon House, designed by Richard Adolphus Came in 1888 as a private residence. It later served as a preparatory school and gentlemen’s club, then became the Clevedon Hotel before taking the Golf Hotel name in 1921.
Nearby, the Woodhall Spa Syndicate built the Alexandra Hospital in 1890 for patients who could not afford treatment at the spa. The Queen Anne Revival building became a Red Cross hospital during the First World War and later worked within the NHS. It is now private apartments and must be viewed only from the public realm. Together, the two buildings show both the social life and medical purpose of the resort.
