The trail starts and finishes in Royal Square, using a clockwise route through Woodhall Spa’s central heritage area.

01Royal Square & Dambusters MemorialBegin where the Royal Hydropathic Hotel and Winter Gardens once stood. Wartime destruction changed the space, which now holds the village’s powerful 617 Squadron memorial.

02St Andrew’s & War MemorialDiscover the site of Woodhall Spa’s first parish church, the surviving churchyard and the Grade II-listed memorial to local people lost in two world wars.

03Jubilee ParkCreated for the 1935 Silver Jubilee and later gifted to the village, the park combines historic gardens, recreation, a bandstand and the much-loved outdoor pool.

04Petwood Hotel & GardensMeet Grace Weigall’s remarkable country house, Harold Peto’s formal gardens and the wartime officers’ mess used by 617 Squadron.

05The Kinema in the WoodsA former sports-ground pavilion and concert hall became a cinema in 1922, retaining a character and atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else.

06The Spa BathsThis is where Woodhall Spa’s story began: a search for coal encountered mineral-rich water, inspiring bathing facilities, treatments and a fashionable health resort.

07Tea House in the WoodsA surviving piece of Edwardian visitor culture, remembered for elegant hospitality, lawns, a lending library and a setting among the trees.

08Victoria Hotel & “Ups and Downs”Imagine Woodhall Spa’s vast flagship hotel, destroyed by fire on Easter Sunday 1920. Its hidden foundations helped give the woodland its local nickname.

09The Pinewoods & Church WalkFormer hotel pleasure grounds, ornamental trees, wartime storage and surviving paths explain why the village still feels spacious, green and distinctive.

10Golf Hotel & Alexandra HospitalThis stop links visitor accommodation, healthcare, Spa Baths patients and the buildings requisitioned during Woodhall Spa’s wartime years.

11Woodhall Spa Cottage MuseumA rare prefabricated bungalow, the Wield family home and John Wield’s photographs make the museum the natural archive and interpretation centre for the trail.

12Former Methodist ChapelLearn how local Methodists campaigned for their own place of worship and created a combined chapel and schoolroom at the end of the 19th century.

13St Peter’s ChurchThe growing village and busy Spa seasons demanded a larger church. The surviving building remains an important landmark on The Broadway.

14Railway Station, Spa Trail & Viking WayThe railway helped transform the resort after 1855. Its former trackbed now carries walkers and cyclists along the Spa Trail and forms part of the much longer Viking Way.

15Eagle LodgeFollow the evolution from a 1870s house to Eagle Lodge Hotel, later a care home and now a hotel once again—a visible survivor of the resort era.

16Victoria AvenueWide avenues, villas, boarding houses and carefully planned greenery make Richard Adolphus Came’s garden-town vision visible in the street itself.

17Came Well & the Royal Hotel SpaDiscover a second mineral-water shaft, sunk in 1904–05 for Came’s Royal Hotel Baths, and the later rediscovery of the filled well.

18Cornwall Terrace & The MallFinish among Came-era commercial and residential architecture, a terrace rebuilt after wartime damage and a hostelry that has served the village for generations.

SPA TRAIL VS. VIKING WAY

The Spa Trail

A flat, approximately three-mile path following the disused railway line between Woodhall Spa and Horncastle. It is ideal for shorter walks and cycling, with art and interpretation features along the route.

The Viking Way

A long-distance trail of about 149 miles running from the Humber Bridge south to Oakham in Rutland. Older visitor guides often give the distance as 147 miles.

The connection: the Spa Trail forms a short, scenic section of the much larger Viking Way. Heritage Trail visitors can enjoy the local section without committing to the full long-distance route.

LOST WOODHALL SPA

Look beyond today’s landscape for the Royal Hydro, Winter Gardens, Victoria Hotel, railway infrastructure, Spa Baths complex and St Andrew’s Church. Licensed then-and-now photography will make these vanished places visible again.

WOODHALL AT WAR

Petwood, Royal Square, the churchyard, Pinewoods and the railway connect the village to wartime accommodation, military storage, remembrance and the enduring story of 617 Squadron.

1820sMineral water begins Woodhall Spa’s story.

1855The railway helps the resort grow.

1887The Syndicate and Came reshape the Spa.

1920The Victoria Hotel is destroyed by fire.

1935Jubilee Park opens.

1943War transforms Royal Square and Petwood.

Before you set off

PLAN YOUR WALK

The published route is designed to be useful without turning the trail into advertising or sending walkers repeatedly to other websites.

Parking & start

Royal Square is the recommended start and finish. Final parking directions and the best long-stay option will be confirmed with the completed route survey.

Toilets & rests

Public facilities, benches and useful rest points will be marked on the final map, with Jubilee Park and the village centre forming natural pauses.

Accessibility

The route is mainly level, but it should not yet be described as fully wheelchair accessible. Surfaces, crossings, dropped kerbs and the woodland section still require a physical check.

OPTIONAL EXTENSIONS

Tower on the Moor and Kirkstead are important stories but do not fit comfortably into the compact central loop. They are reserved for future extension routes with honest access guidance.

PHOTOGRAPHY STANDARD

The finished stop pages will use genuine current Woodhall Spa photographs and properly licensed archive material. Generic vintage stock and AI-created “historic” scenes will not be used as evidence.
